Malindi Museum
Visitors can explore artifacts from the Mijikenda people, the predominant ethnic group of the area, gaining insights into their traditions and craftsmanship through wooden totems, tools, and other cultural objects.
The museum also showcases relics from the Arab traders who established settlements in Malindi centuries ago, highlighting their impact on the region’s development. Exhibits dedicated to the Swahili civilization further illustrate the unique cultural blend and extensive trade networks that characterized this coastal society. The museum acknowledges the era of European exploration, featuring items related to Vasco da Gama and the Portuguese presence in Malindi.
Archaeological discoveries, including artifacts recovered from the seabed like ancient anchors and pottery, reveal the rich maritime history of the coast. Displays on the diverse marine life, including a remarkable coelacanth fossil, a “living fossil” fish, complete the picture of Malindi’s multifaceted heritage.
The building itself, with its distinctive colonnade and rooftop terrace, adds to the museum experience.
